Duncan O'Mahony

CMPC, RCC, LMHC, Doctoral Candidate

Duncan O'Mahony is a doctoral psychology intern in the Counseling Psychology PsyD program at Northwest University. Born in Ireland and now a Canadian citizen, he brings a unique perspective to his work as a former professional athlete, Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC), researcher, husband, and father of two school-aged children.

Duncan works with children and adolescents, providing both psychological assessment and therapeutic services. He has a particular interest in neurodevelopmental and diagnostic assessment, including evaluations related to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), specific learning disorders, executive functioning, and emotional-behavioral functioning. Duncan sees the assessment process as an opportunity to help individuals and families better understand themselves, recognize their strengths, connect with appropriate resources and supports, and identify potential accommodations that can enhance success in daily life. His therapeutic approach integrates humanistic and cognitive-behavioral principles while remaining highly pragmatic and goal-oriented. Duncan believes that meaningful change occurs within a strong therapeutic relationship built on authenticity, empathy, collaboration, and trust. He strives to create a supportive environment where clients feel understood while also developing practical skills, strategies, and achievable goals that help them navigate challenges and create meaningful change in their daily lives.

In addition to his clinical work, Duncan has extensive experience in sport and performance psychology. As a CMPC and former professional athlete, he has worked with athletes ranging from youth and developmental levels to Canadian National Team and Olympic athletes. His doctoral research focused on professional athlete welfare, mental health, and help-seeking behavior. He remains passionate about supporting both performance excellence and psychological well-being across sport, education, and everyday life. Outside of work, Duncan enjoys trail running, baking with his children, spending time outdoors with his family, and can often be found with an espresso in hand.
